Khyber’s Journey: From One Word to a New Life

In early 2024, Khyber and his family of ten arrived in the United States as refugees from Afghanistan. They had left behind everything they knew, seeking safety and a fresh start. Life in their new country was overwhelming—new faces, unfamiliar streets, and a language he didn’t understand. But Khyber was determined.
One day, a friend told him about Empower Clarkston, a program designed to help refugees gain valuable skills for the workforce. Excited but nervous, Khyber applied. There was just one problem—he didn’t speak English, a requirement for the program. The only English word he knew was “banana.”
Despite the language barrier, his passion was undeniable. Seeing his determination, the program made an exception. A fellow trainee volunteered to translate for him during lessons. Khyber also enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, knowing that mastering the language was key to his success.
From day one, Khyber’s dedication stood out. He never missed a single class, arriving early and staying late to practice. He spent his nights studying, practicing new words, and refining his technical skills. Slowly, “banana” turned into full sentences. By the end of the program, he could confidently communicate, proving that hard work and perseverance could overcome any obstacle.
Khyber’s journey is more than just a success story—it’s an inspiration. His transformation, from knowing a single word to thriving in a new language and trade, embodies the spirit of resilience. Today, he not only has a bright future ahead but also serves as a role model for others following in his footsteps.
At Empower Clarkston, we believe in potential, not limitations. Khyber proved that with determination and the right support, anything is possible.
